How to Eat with Invisalign®

Many people choose Invisalign clear aligners for their orthodontic treatment because they can be removed to eat, and don't need any dietary restrictions. Here, our Burnaby orthodontists share some key points you need to know about eating during your treatment with Invisalign.

You can easily eat with Invisalign! You can remove your aligners to eat and they don't require any dietary restrictions. All you have to do is take them out to eat and drink anything you want as long as you wear them for the required amount of time every day.

Eating During Invisalign Treatment

Unlike traditional metal braces that have a list of foods you aren't able to eat (because food can get caught in the brackets and wires), you can take your Invisalign aligners out to continue eating and drinking all of your favourite foods.

Just remember to remove your aligners prior to consuming anything that's not cold water. Drinking sugary, dark drinks with your aligners on can lead to plaque buildup. Hot beverages such as coffee and tea could also warp or stain your aligners.

Brushing & Rinsing Your Teeth After Eating

Before putting your aligners back in after eating or drinking, you have to clean them and brush your teeth first. Food could get stuck between your teeth and clear aligners, which could lead to damage and tooth decay.

If you can't brush after eating or drinking, you need to at least rinse your mouth and the aligners with water before putting them back in.

Putting Your Aligners Back On

You should wear your Invisalign aligners for at least 20 hours a day so be mindful of the total time you have them out for every day. The idea is to keep them in as long as possible to get the best treatment results possible.
