Do Braces Set Off Metal Detectors

Do Braces Set Off Metal Detectors

One of the most popular questions our Burnaby orthodontists get from concerned patients is in regard to metal detectors. We are here to tell you why you shouldn't worry about setting on off.

Will My Braces Set Off a Metal Detector

You can rest assured because the answer is no. Despite the metal brackets on your braces, you should not be setting off a metal detector when you walk through it. You don't have to worry if you are heading to the airport or somewhere else that may require you to walk through a metal detector.

Why Don't Braces Set Off Metal Detectors

While it's true that your braces are made with metal brackets, the material is not actually going to interfere with a security metal detector.

Traditional braces are made out of titanium and other lightweight metals that are designed specifically so you can go through without being searched.

Other Common Myths About Braces

There are a number of myths associated with metal braces such as the following:

Can I get struck by lightning?

Most kids get scared and worried when that weekly thunderstorm rolls into town. Well, they’re wrong! People who wear braces have a 1 in 700,000 chance of being struck by lightning which is exactly the same likelihood as people who do not wear braces. It doesn’t make any difference. Your braces should not become a lightning rod.

If two people with braces kiss, can their braces become stuck together?

With today’s smaller sleeker braces it is extremely difficult – almost impossible – to lock braces while kissing. Also, braces are not magnetic, which means any “attraction” felt is on the part of the wearers, so pucker up!

Will my braces attract the attention of fish while scuba diving?

There is no need to cancel your next scuba dive. The small brackets used in modern braces, especially ceramic or tooth-colored brackets, will not attract attention from fish or sea life.

Will my braces look dorky?

Braces do not have to look dorky, especially with all the variations available now. Ceramic braces (also known as invisible braces), braces with colored bands, and even braces that attach to the back of your teeth where nobody can see them are all options.
